The extreme weather in Western Australia is about to reach alarming levels, with a heatwave warning issued for several regions as temperatures are anticipated to soar beyond 40 degrees Celsius. As we step into the first weekend of 2026, residents in areas such as the Pilbara, Gascoyne, Goldfields, Eucla, and the North and South Interior, along with the Central Wheatbelt, are bracing for what could be one of the hottest spells of the year.
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, this intense heat will not only dominate the weekend but is expected to escalate further into next week, potentially hitting the mid-forties. Meteorologist Angus Hines has shared insights on the weather patterns, indicating that most of WA will bask in bright sunshine under severe conditions affecting significant parts of the state.
"Temperatures are set to hover around the mid-thirties along the west coast, but regions like the Wheatbelt, Great Southern, and certain interior areas should prepare for readings reaching 40 degrees Celsius," Hines explained.
The Pilbara region will experience particularly extreme conditions, with forecasts predicting temperatures around 40 degrees Celsius inland. For example, Kalgoorlie is expected to endure a sweltering 41 degrees on Saturday, followed by even higher temperatures of 43 degrees on Sunday and a scorching 44 degrees by Monday. Meanwhile, Karratha is projected to hit 39 degrees over the weekend, while Newman could see temperatures rise to 41 and then 43 degrees over Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Port Hedland is expected to remain at 39 degrees throughout the weekend.
In Northam and York, residents should also brace themselves for high temperatures, with maximums reaching 40 and 41 degrees across the weekend. On the other hand, Perth's metropolitan area is set to enjoy a more temperate weekend, with city temperatures likely to remain in the low thirties.
