In a groundbreaking move that underscores the evolving landscape of maritime technology, VARD has officially inked a deal with Ocean Infinity to design and construct four cutting-edge Multi-Purpose Robotic Vessels (MPVs). This new contract, valued at over EUR 200 million, marks a significant milestone in the long-standing partnership between these two innovative companies.
VARD, which operates as a subsidiary of the renowned Fincantieri Group from Norway, is set to play a crucial role in supporting Ocean Infinity’s ambitions to expand its capabilities in advanced robotic and unmanned maritime operations. These MPVs are engineered to assist with a diverse array of offshore activities, encompassing both remotely operated and fully autonomous missions.
The scope of this agreement goes beyond just vessel construction; it encompasses a wide range of supplies from various companies within the VARD group. Notably, Vard Electro will provide an extensive suite of SeaQ systems designed to facilitate seamless remote operations. Meanwhile, Vard Interiors will take charge of crafting complete interior solutions that marry innovative design with energy-efficient systems aimed at enhancing crew comfort and operational efficiency.
Additionally, the project will see contributions from Seaonics, which is tasked with delivering the Launch and Recovery System (LARS). This sophisticated system is vital for the effective handling of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and geotechnical equipment, ensuring that the vessels can perform their designated tasks with precision.
The construction of these vessels will occur across two locations: two will be built at VARD’s shipyards in Norway, with expected deliveries in the first and second quarters of 2028. The remaining pair will be manufactured at Vard Vung Tau in Vietnam, aiming for completion by the third and fourth quarters of the same year.
Pierroberto Folgiero, the Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of Fincantieri, commented on the significance of this contract amidst the rise of unmanned vessels. He stated, "This new contract with Ocean Infinity showcases Fincantieri and VARD’s capability to deliver pioneering solutions that push the boundaries of robotization within the maritime sector." He emphasized that their global production network and technological prowess position them as an invaluable partner for industry leaders, reinforcing Fincantieri’s reputation as a hub for groundbreaking innovation and operational excellence.
