Burke stated that he has reviewed ASIO's decisions and actions concerning Naveed Akram, the 24-year-old charged with 59 offences, including 15 counts of murder, since he first came to the agency's attention in October 2019. The minister emphasized his confidence in the decisions made, regardless of the government in power at the time. This statement comes amidst the community's mourning for the victims, with funerals being held for those who lost their lives, including 10-year-old Matilda, the youngest victim.
Adding to the gravity of the situation, 17 of the 38 people injured in the shooting remain hospitalized, with one in critical condition.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has weighed in, stating that these acts are a direct result of rampant antisemitism, fueled by what he views as a 'flaccid policy' of the Australian government. This statement follows his earlier remarks blaming the Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, for the rise of Islamist extremism due to the government's recognition of the Palestinian state. Albanese has firmly rejected these accusations. At a multi-faith memorial service, Albanese called for unity, emphasizing that Australians stand together, regardless of their faith, and that the Jewish community has every right to live in peace and safety.
Authorities in the Philippines confirmed that Akram and his 50-year-old father, Sajid, traveled to the country between November 1 and November 28. They listed Davao as their final destination, a city in the southern Philippines. This area has been a center for pro-Islamic State and Islamist militant groups. Philippine police and hotel staff reported that the pair spent their entire visit in Davao city, rarely leaving the hotel for extended periods.
Burke stated that he couldn't publicly reveal whether ASIO continued to monitor Akram after the initial six-month examination or if the trip to the Philippines triggered an alert. He also addressed the government's decision to move ASIO and the Australian Federal Police between departments, stating that the recent reversal was to ensure seamless information-sharing. Burke also confirmed that both agencies have ample resources to combat extremism.
ASIO's director-general, Mike Burgess, has drawn parallels between groups like Hizb ut-Tahrir and the neo-Nazi group the National Socialist Network, warning that their anti-Israel rhetoric fuels antisemitism. The UK has banned Hizb ut-Tahrir, and Burke stated that he would list the group once it met the legal threshold.
