Tenby's new hotel development, 1838, is an exciting project that promises to breathe new life into the town's historic center. This ambitious endeavor, named after the year Tenby became a shopping destination, aims to transform a former department store into a vibrant hub of hospitality and leisure.
The Vision and Its Challenges
The project's vision is to restore the building's iconic features, such as the stained glass windows and dome structure, while creating a modern, luxurious space. However, as project manager Will Crockerton reveals, the journey hasn't been without its challenges.
"It was a real labor of love," Will shares. "When we first took over, the place was filled with shop fittings and mannequins. We had to clear out over 15,000 coat hangers! But beneath all that, we discovered a lot of rot and decay. So, we made the decision to start from scratch, giving ourselves a clean slate to work with."
A Labor of Love
The restoration process has been meticulous, with a focus on preserving the building's unique character. Will's decorator, David, has pieced together the crumbling stained glass windows, ensuring they'll grace the town for another century.
"What makes this project so fascinating is the balance between modernizing and preserving history," Will explains. "We want to create a space that feels fresh and luxurious, but also pays homage to Tenby's rich past."
A Community Effort
The development is not just about creating a new hotel; it's about regenerating the heart of Tenby. Will and his business partner, Gareth Bassett, felt a personal connection to the project, with Will being a 'Tenby boy' himself.
"It's important to us to get this building back to its former glory," Will says. "We want to create a space that Tenby can be proud of, a place that becomes a new landmark for the town."
Future Plans
The development is set to include a restaurant, cocktail bar, steakhouse, and a spa. Will hopes to have the restaurant open by autumn, with the rest of the project following suit by Easter next year.
"We're also working with the local council to regenerate the space above the town market," Will adds. "We envision a gym, spa, and treatment rooms up there, further enhancing the town's amenities."
A New Chapter for Tenby
1838 represents a new chapter for Tenby, blending its rich history with modern comforts. It's a project that showcases the potential for regeneration and the power of community-driven initiatives.
"I believe this development will become a symbol of Tenby's resilience and its ability to adapt and thrive," Will concludes. "It's an exciting time for the town, and we can't wait to welcome visitors to experience it for themselves."
As the project progresses, Tenby's new hotel promises to offer a unique blend of history and luxury, creating a memorable experience for all who visit.
