Social Security beneficiaries may face a lower cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in 2027, according to new government inflation data. The latest figures suggest that if the current inflation trend continues, the COLA could be significantly lower than the previous year's adjustment. The 2026 COLA, which was 2.8%, provided a modest increase in benefits, but the 2027 adjustment might be even smaller. Mary Johnson, a Social Security analyst, estimates a potential 1.2% increase, which would be the lowest COLA since 2017. This is concerning, as it may not adequately address the rising costs of living.
The Senior Citizens League, a nonpartisan group, shares this concern, stating that a 2.8% COLA would worsen financial stress among seniors. Their research reveals that over half of seniors have already cut back on healthcare due to cost, and a 3% COLA is considered insufficient by many.
A recent AARP survey supports this view, with 77% of respondents aged 50 and above stating that a 3% COLA is not enough to keep up with inflation. The ideal increase, according to most, is 5% or higher.
It's important to note that these COLA projections are preliminary and can change based on future economic data. The Social Security Administration uses third-quarter Consumer Price Index (CPI) data to calculate the COLA, comparing it to the previous year's data. The latest January CPI data shows a 2.2% increase over the past 12 months, which could influence the final 2027 COLA figure.
