A Legend Lost: The Passing of Eric Allan, Iconic Actor and Storyteller
The entertainment world mourns the loss of a true veteran, Eric Allan, who has left an indelible mark on television and radio for nearly five decades.
But here's where it gets intriguing... Eric's journey began in the early days of iconic shows like Emmerdale and The Archers, shaping the narratives we know and love today.
With a career spanning 48 years, Eric Allan's impact is undeniable. He first graced our screens as blacksmith Frank Blakey in Emmerdale, back when it was known as Emmerdale Farm. One of his most memorable moments was the show's first wedding, where Frank tied the knot with Janie Harker (Diane Grayson).
Frank's character caused quite a stir in the village, opposing hunting and refusing to shoe horses ridden in local hunts. It's these bold choices that made him a fan favorite.
And this is the part most people miss... Eric's talent extended beyond television. He also lent his voice to BBC Radio 4's The Archers, playing farmer Bert Fry for a quarter of a century.
Eric leaves behind a loving family, including his wife Susan, whom he married in 1963, and their children. His roots were firmly planted in Yorkshire, but his journey took him to Canada and back, eventually leading him to study at RADA at the age of 18.
His early career saw him grace the stages of Leicester and Nottingham theatres, and he spent several enriching years with the Royal Shakespeare Company. It was here that he worked with director Mike Leigh, leading to his first feature film, Bleak Moments.
The film, adapted from a stage play, divided critics with its unique style, but The Guardian praised it as "A striking and original debut."
After his time on Emmerdale, Eric joined The Archers in 1997, taking over the role of farmer Bert Fry. In a 2021 interview, Eric reflected on Bert's role, noting, "He's the character the production team turns to when they need a bit of light relief from heavy storylines."
Eric's last appearance on The Archers was in February 2020, and the following year, his character Bert retired and passed away off-microphone.
One of Eric's most notable performances in The Archers was in 2015, when Bert's wife Freda died during the great Ambridge flood. Freda, the cook at the local pub, The Bull, was never heard on the show, but Eric always felt her presence strongly.
Born in 1940, Eric was the son of a soldier-turned-headmaster father and a midwife mother. His talent knew no bounds, and he graced our screens in various other notable roles, including as a tabloid sports editor in the BBC series Hold the Back Page, opposite David Warner.
He also played Les Fox, one of Bet Lynch's boyfriends in Coronation Street, and had guest appearances in Z Cars, The New Avengers, Bergerac, The Bill, and EastEnders.
Eric Allan passed away on February 8, leaving behind a legacy of storytelling and a lifetime of memories. His impact on the entertainment industry is undeniable, and his passing leaves a void that can never be filled.
