There are many things to do near Nanaimo and on Vancouver Island. We have listed many of our favourites below. If you would like to know how far a town mentioned is, please use our:
Vancouver Island Driving Distances Chart.

Visit The Coombs Old Country Market

Famous as home to "The Goats on the Roof" the Coombs Old Country Market is a true family experience. Shop for international foods, imported gifts, in store baked goods, gardening treasures, an amazing array of toys, and of course ... ice cream! They also have a restaurant, a deli and fresh produce all under the (goat groomed) roof of the recently renovated market. There is a fair with a ferris wheel, merry-go-round, train ride and more, right next door!

Visit Cathedral Grove

Visit one of the most accessible stands of giant Douglas fir trees on Vancouver Island. You can stroll through a network of trails under the shadow of ancient Douglas-fir trees, some of them more than 800 years old!

Cathedral Grove is approximately 0:30 away by car.

Enjoy A Game Of Golf

If you love to golf, you will find Vancouver Island is a golfer's paradise. There is an exciting selection of golf courses nearby, suitable for all from beginners to pros.

Check out the following list for several examples:

Enjoy A Show At The Port Theatre

The Port Theatre is a focal point for visitors, offering a broad range of cultural events suitable for families, seniors, youths and adults.

The Port Theatre is about 0:20 away by car.

Visit Newcastle Island Marine Provincial Park

Newcastle Island offers 22 km of natural trails, and is only 10 minutes away by passenger ferry from Nanaimo. Along the shoreline, you will find steep sandstone cliffs, sunny beaches, caves and caverns. Inland, you will find a mature forest of Douglas-fir, Garry oak, arbutus and dogwood.

Have An Adventure At WildPlay Element Parks

Do you want to:

  • Go Bungee Jumping Head First Over a 150 Foot Drop?
  • Swing Through a Canyon at 140 KM/Hour on the King Swing?
  • Travel Tree-to-Tree Using Zip Lines, Suspended Bridges, Scramble Nets and Swinging Logs?
  • Fly Across a Spectacular River Canyon on a Zip Line?

Visit The Historic Bastion

Nanaimo's most important Heritage Building, the Bastion is the last free standing, historic Hudson's Bay Company fortification in North America. Celebrating its 150th birthday in 2003, the Bastion was built in 1853 to serve as a company office, arsenal and storage facility--and in the event of enemy insurgency, a safe haven for miners and their families.

World Class Shopping

Time Magazine has reported that Nanaimo has more square meters of retail space per capita than any other city in North America! A large selection of malls and big box retailers on the outskirts of the city is balanced by more unique and interesting shops in the downtown core.

Hunt For Ammonite Fossils

Benson Creek Falls Regional Park's Ammonite Falls is one of three significant waterfalls in a series of canyons sliced deeply into the thick loam and sedimentary bedrock of Mount Benson's foothills. A variety of oceanic fossils can be found in a vast number of concretions that can be broken open to reveal the imprint of ancient life.

Visit An Art Gallery

Nanaimo and the surrounding region attract a variety of skilled and inspiring artists creating art in a wide range of media, and drawing on disparate west coast traditions. From Native Canadian artists to modern sensationalists, you will not be disappointed with the selection in the local art galleries.

Tour The Island Wineries

Cherry Point winery was established in 1990 when founders and wine trailblazers Wayne and Helena Ulrich purchased 34 acres on a former mink ranch a few miles south of Cowichan Bay in Cobble Hill. Since wine growing was still new on Vancouver Island, they planted the vineyard with several grape varieties, for nobody really knew which grapes suited the Island's soil and climate. Since then, wineries on Vancouver Island have flourished.
